If you’ve been looking for a new family pet to add to your household, chances are you’ve stumbled upon the various poodle cross breeds available! These puppies have grown increasingly popular in recent years due to the number of benefits they offer compared to other breeds. When looking at the most popular cross breeds in the UK, five of the top ten dogs are a poodle cross – with the cockapoo snatching the number one spot.
Here at Perfect Pooches, we provide a few different poodle cross breeds, including cockapoos, maltipoos, and cavapoos, and we know for ourselves how great these dogs can be! Our team has come together to lay out all the reasons why you should consider a poodle cross!
Intelligent and Playful
When many people think of the poodle, they may think of the neatly groomed, prim and proper breed examples showcased at events such as Crufts, which wrongfully makes people believe that these dogs aren’t very clever. This simply isn’t true! Poodles are extremely intelligent and easy to train, with only one dog breed (Border Collie) out performing them! When bred with a cocker spaniel, maltese, or cavalier, you end up with a clever dog that is highly playful too – making them great additions to a family with children too!
Lower Shedding
Poodle fur is very dense and compact and they lack the fine undercoat most other breeds have, making them less likely to shed than other breeds. While a cross breed may shed a little more, they still lose less fur on a day to day basis than other breeds. This lower shed is great for people with allergies as there is less loose dander to trigger a reaction. While no dog is completely hypoallergenic, poodles and their cross offspring are the closest to it.

Choose Your Size
When cross breeding, estimating the size of your puppy when full grown can be tricky, but since poodles come in a range of sizes – from standard to miniature to toy – it can be fairly easy to predict whether the puppy will be a large breed, small breed, or miniature breed. For example, a labradoodle – labrador and standard poodle – is considered a large breed while a cavapoo – cavalier spaniel and miniature poodle – is considered a small breed. This means that no matter the size of your home, you will be able to find a poodle cross to suit your space!
Better Health
It’s heart breaking when your dear companion develops an illness or injury. Many purebred breeds have inherent problems that come from the way they are built – such as pugs whose squished noses can make it difficult to breathe. Poodle cross breeds however, tend not to have any major defects, with stronger genes overpowering weaker ones. There’s also the benefit of poodles having long snouts and very few joint issues that are passed on to their offspring.
Where Can I Get a Poodle Cross?
As poodle cross breeds are such a popular pet option, many reputable and certified breeders supply them. However, we encourage you to do your research! It’s important to identify a licensed breeder over a puppy farm. Some signs of a reliable breeder include:
- They’ll be happy for you to see the puppies and visit the place they’re being raised.
- You’ll be able to see both parents of the puppy or be given the stud dog information.
- You will be provided with either a Kennel Club or Pedigree Club registration.
- They’ll be happy to show you their licence to breed from their local authority.
- They care more for the welfare of the dog than money.
Many people don’t know that a proper breeder will hold a licence. For us at Perfect Pooches, we hold licences from both Wealden District Council and Rother District Council and all of our puppies are either Kennel Club or Pedigree Club registered.
